Youth Mentoring Program For the North Shore area PDF Print E-mail

Kia ora,

My name is Joseva (Joe) Viqasi and I am a youth support worker for Brothers In Arms Youth Mentoring Trust. Brothers in Arms is a one-on-one, friendship based mentoring programme. This programme recruits, trains, matches and supports people of goodwill who will mentor one young person to make a difference in their lives.

Three key principles that the programme is founded on are: longevity, regularity and intensity. The mentoring is for a period of one year for roughly three hours per week. We train the mentors and then do any necessary checks. We then match the mentor with a young person on a fun matching day.

The young person can be referred from police, health or social workers. The needs of the young persons range from youth offending to social problems. The ages range from as young as 9 years up to 17 years of age.

We want to support our communities youth and the work being done by organizations. By providing youth mentoring we believe we can put positive role models in the community for young people to benefit from. From our experience our young people who have been through the program gain self confidence and life skills.

At the moment we have a female mentor who is available to mentor a young girl. Please advise us if one of your youth are in need of a mentor. We have a fun Matching day coming up soon where they can meet.

Look Forward to working with you to support the young people in your community.

Kind regards,
Joseva Viqasi
